India’s alcoholic beverage industry is witnessing a major transformation as Gen Z consumers increasingly move toward flavour-driven, experimental, and experience-led drinking choices. Traditional preferences for strong spirits are gradually giving way to lighter, easy-to-drink, and locally inspired flavours across vodka, ready-to-drink (RTD), and cocktail categories.
According to industry insights, younger consumers are reshaping the alcobev market through a growing preference for flavour experimentation, social drinking experiences, cocktail culture, and “repertoire drinking” — a trend where consumers switch between multiple beverage categories instead of remaining loyal to a single spirit.
Leading companies such as United Spirits and Radico Khaitan say Gen Z consumers are now influencing product innovation and marketing strategies across the sector. Brands are increasingly focusing on visually appealing, mixable, and premium flavour profiles designed to connect with younger urban audiences.

One of the most noticeable shifts is the rise of India-inspired flavours. Smirnoff recently introduced variants such as Minty Jamun, Mirchi Mango, and Zesty Lime specifically for the Indian market, blending familiar local tastes with modern cocktail culture. Similarly, Magic Moments expanded its “Flavours of India” portfolio with offerings including Jamun SpicyMint, Alphonso Mango, and Thandaai-inspired variants.
Industry experts believe the trend reflects a broader behavioural change among younger consumers. Unlike previous generations that often prioritised quantity and strength, Gen Z drinkers are drinking more selectively and socially. Taste, presentation, convenience, and the overall drinking experience are becoming more important factors in purchase decisions.
Festival culture, nightlife experiences, music events, and social media-driven trends are also accelerating demand for flavour-forward beverages. Bars and restaurants across urban India are increasingly adding fruit-infused cocktails, spicy mixes, and premium mocktails to their menus to cater to evolving consumer preferences.
The influence of this trend extends beyond alcoholic drinks. Zero-alcohol beverages and sophisticated mocktails are also gaining popularity among young consumers seeking flavour-rich social experiences without high alcohol consumption. This shift is encouraging beverage companies to innovate across both alcoholic and non-alcoholic segments.
As India’s Alcobev market evolves, flavour-first innovation is emerging as a key growth driver. With Gen Z consumers prioritising experimentation, authenticity, and experience-led drinking, companies are expected to continue investing in locally inspired flavours, premiumisation, and ready-to-drink formats tailored to the next generation of consumers.
