The Meghalaya government is set to introduce a QR code-based tracking system for every bottle of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) sold in the state, with the rollout expected in the next few months. Excise Minister Kyrmen Shylla said the new system would improve tracking and transparency, allowing officials to easily monitor sales and prevent any illegal activity. A dashboard will provide real-time data, making it easier to manage and reduce any leakage in the system.
This move follows a recent approval by the State Cabinet to implement the QR tracking system, which aims to streamline operations and increase accountability within the liquor industry.
In addition, Minister Shylla highlighted the government’s efforts to make Meghalaya a key player in fruit wine production. He explained that before the legalization of fruit wine production, farmers often faced significant losses due to unsold fruit. Now, by turning surplus fruit into wine, farmers are benefiting from this new market. The government plans to promote local fruit wines both within India and internationally.
