Diageo launches Rare Series with 5 very limited Scotch whiskies

Diageo has introduced a new collection of premium Scotch whiskies called the Rare Series. This is a special lineup made from some of the rarest whisky barrels the company owns. The first release includes five different bottles, priced between $900 and $6,350. Only 122 bottles have been set aside for the U.S.

Diageo is the world’s biggest whisky producer, with 31 distilleries and around 10 million casks (barrels) in storage. With this new series, the company wants to showcase some of its most unique and aged whiskies.

The first batch includes whiskies aged between 34 and 55 years. Some come from famous distilleries, while others are from places that have been closed for decades.

According to Ewan Morgan, Diageo’s head of rare whisky, the company carefully selects only the most special casks. He says these whiskies are not just old, but also have deep character and reflect where and how they were made.

These releases will not happen regularly. They will only come out when special casks are available, and in very small quantities. Buyers will need to register through Diageo’s private client system to get a chance to purchase. Each bottle also comes in a unique decanter with a granite top, inspired by Scotland’s landscape.

Highlights from the first Rare Series:

Talisker 1992 (33 years old)

This whisky has a coastal character, with hints of sea salt and seaweed. It also has a slightly sweet, fruitcake-like taste and a spicy finish. Only 30 bottles are available in the U.S., priced at $1,300.

Caol Ila 1983 (42 years old)

This is the oldest Caol Ila whisky ever released by Diageo. It has a softer smoky flavour, with creamy and slightly meaty notes. Around 30 bottles are available in the U.S., priced at $3,000.

Glenury Royal 1970 (55 years old)

This is the oldest whisky in the collection and also the oldest Diageo has ever bottled. It comes from a distillery that shut down long ago. The flavour includes fruity notes like apple and pear, with a smooth and slightly sweet finish. Only 21 bottles are available in the U.S., priced at $6,350.

Clynelish 1983 (42 years old)

This whisky is known for its smooth, waxy texture and balanced taste. It starts sweet and floral, then becomes slightly salty and spicy. Just 16 bottles are available in the U.S., priced at $4,000.

Blair Athol 1991 (34 years old)

This whisky offers rich flavours like espresso coffee, dark chocolate, raisins, and a hint of hazelnut. It’s made using a new ageing method for this distillery. About 25 bottles are available in the U.S., priced at $900.

Overall, the Rare Series is designed to highlight some of the finest and rarest Scotch whiskies in Diageo’s collection. The company plans to release more in the future, but only when truly special casks are ready.
