Restrictions to Remain Effective Till July 7, 2026
In a significant move to preserve the spiritual and religious sanctity of the holy city, the Amritsar district administration has once again imposed strict restrictions on the sale, storage, and public consumption of liquor, tobacco products, meat, and other intoxicants within the historic walled city area.
The fresh directives were issued by Dalwinderjit Singh under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. The administration stated that the decision aims to maintain the religious atmosphere around prominent Sikh shrines and uphold the traditional character of the city.
According to the orders, the commercial sale, storage, distribution, and public use of alcohol, cigarettes, bidis, pan masala, tobacco products, meat items, and similar intoxicants have been prohibited within the notified limits of the walled city.

Authorities have warned that strict legal action will be taken against violators.
Officials said the restrictions are aligned with the Punjab government’s policy for designated holy cities, including Sri Harmandir Sahib, Sri Anandpur Sahib, and Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, where maintaining religious decorum and spiritual discipline is considered essential.
The district administration has directed police officials and health authorities to ensure strict implementation of the prohibitory orders across the notified zone. The Civil Surgeon’s office has also been instructed to monitor compliance and coordinate with enforcement agencies.
Authorities appealed to local residents, shopkeepers, and visitors to cooperate in preserving the religious identity, cultural heritage, and peaceful environment of the holy city. The administration confirmed that the restrictions will remain in force until July 7, 2026.
