India’s new generation of drinkers is not moving away from alcohol—they are simply changing how they consume it. Instead of drinking more, young consumers, especially Gen Z, are choosing better-quality drinks and more meaningful experiences.
According to Debasree Dasgupta of Pernod Ricard India, the shift is not about quitting alcohol but upgrading choices. Young Indians are drinking less in quantity but opting for premium spirits, cocktails, and curated experiences.
India remains the world’s largest whisky market, and the opportunity continues to grow with nearly 30 million new legal-age drinkers entering the market every year. Unlike some global markets where alcohol consumption is slowing, India is still expanding, driven by rising incomes and evolving lifestyles.

Industry leaders like Praveen Someshwar of Diageo India and Vinay Golikeri of Bacardi India agree that the trend is clear—consumers are “drinking better.” Traditional choices like whisky with soda are gradually being replaced by creative cocktails and new flavour combinations.
Drinking habits are also becoming more thoughtful. Younger consumers prefer social, casual settings and are more focused on moderation and variety rather than heavy consumption. Cocktails are increasingly seen as part of a social experience rather than just a drink.
The numbers reflect this shift. India’s alcohol market is growing rapidly, with overall consumption rising and premium segments expanding even faster. Categories like ready-to-drink beverages and premium spirits are seeing strong growth, while taste preferences are also evolving, with more interest in Irish whiskey, agave spirits, and Indian single malts.
Brands are adapting to this change by focusing more on storytelling, lifestyle, and cultural connection rather than just product features. Campaigns like those for Blenders Pride now highlight individuality and self-expression, which resonate strongly with younger audiences.
Overall, India’s alcohol market is not just growing—it is maturing. The new generation is reshaping the industry by prioritising quality, experience, and personal identity, pushing brands to innovate and stay culturally relevant.
