Paul John Whisky: The Story Behind One of India’s Leading Single Malts
Paul John Single Malt has become one of the most respected names in Indian whisky, blending global influence with a strong local identity. Interestingly, the brand was first launched in the UK in 2012, targeting an audience already familiar with single malts. The strategy worked—early international recognition helped the brand grow quickly, and today it is sold in over 40 countries with hundreds of awards.
The whisky is produced by John Distilleries, founded by Paul John in 1992. While the company initially focused on mass-market spirits, Paul John aimed to create something different—one of India’s first single malt whiskies. What began with just two variants has now expanded into a wide range of expressions, including peated styles.
A key factor behind the whisky’s character is its production in Goa. The region’s warm and humid climate speeds up the ageing process, allowing the whisky to mature nearly three times faster than in Scotland. This “tropical ageing” gives the whisky rich flavours even at a younger age.

The ingredients are also distinctly Indian. The whisky is made using six-row barley grown in the Himalayan foothills, local yeast, and Goan spring water, creating a fuller and more robust flavour profile compared to traditional Scotch whiskies.
Over the years, Paul John has built a strong presence both internationally and in India. Initially export-focused, the brand now sells the majority of its bottles domestically. Its growth has also been supported by initiatives like Make in India, which helped expand its reach across the country.

Popular variants include Brilliance, known for its citrus and fruity notes; Classic Select Cask, which offers rich, intense flavours; and Peated Select Cask, which delivers a balanced smoky character. The brand also releases special editions and experimental batches, showcasing innovation and craftsmanship.
Today, Paul John stands as a symbol of India’s rising reputation in the global whisky industry—proving that Indian single malts can compete with the best in the world.
