Kolkata Liquor Shops See Huge Rush After 96-Hour Ban, Two-Bottle Limit Imposed

After the 96-hour “dry day” imposed by the Election Commission of India, liquor shops across Kolkata witnessed massive crowds as soon as they reopened on Friday morning.

Even though shops were scheduled to open at 10 am, people started lining up as early as 8 am, creating long queues across areas like Belgharia, Chandni Chowk, and Bentinck Street. The rush reminded many of the panic buying seen during the COVID period, with some customers even taking leave from work to buy alcohol.

To control the situation and prevent hoarding or black marketing, the excise department has enforced a strict limit of two bottles per person, regardless of the type of liquor. Authorities have also warned of strict action against anyone violating these rules.

Despite the reopening, supply remains limited. Shops are not allowed to restock until May 4, the day of vote counting, raising concerns about possible shortages. Retailers said that while sales have increased sharply, the available stock may not be enough to meet ongoing demand.

Many customers expressed frustration over the long closure, saying they faced inconvenience due to lack of access over the past few days.

Shops are currently operating with restricted timings—open until 10 pm on Friday and 6 pm on Saturday. The extended ban, introduced in phases to maintain law and order during the elections, has received mixed reactions, with confusion and debate continuing among the public.
