Prayagraj, October 21, 2026: The Prayagraj district administration has declared October 23 a dry day in view of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council election for the Allahabad–Jhansi Graduates’ Constituency. All liquor outlets across the district will remain closed on polling day, with restrictions extending to country liquor shops, foreign liquor shops, model shops, bars and bhang shops
Upma Pandey, Deputy District Election Officer, confirmed that the closure order applies to the designated establishments throughout Prayagraj district. Liquor retailers and other licensed establishments covered by the directive will not be permitted to open for sales during the notified period. The measure is intended to ensure that the election is conducted peacefully and fairly, without the distribution or consumption of intoxicating substances creating opportunities for electoral malpractice.

The dry-day declaration comes as Uttar Pradesh prepares for elections to 11 Legislative Council constituencies, comprising five graduates’ constituencies and six teachers’ constituencies. Polling is scheduled for October 23, 2026, with the Allahabad–Jhansi Graduates’ Constituency among the seats going to the polls. The election forms part of the state’s wider Legislative Council electoral process.
Election-related liquor restrictions are intended to prevent the distribution of alcohol to influence voters, maintain public order and support a fair polling process.
