Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has announced plans to take stringent action against bars found serving alcohol to people below the prescribed age of 23, following a fatal road accident near Kochi that claimed the lives of three young people. Excise Minister M. Liju informed the state Assembly on Tuesday that the government would strengthen enforcement measures to prevent underage alcohol consumption at licensed establishments.
Responding to a question raised by Ernakulam MLA T. J. Vinod regarding the Mini Cooper crash near Nedumbassery, the minister said the Excise Department had registered cases against three bars for allegedly serving liquor to the accused persons who were below the prescribed age. He said the department acted promptly after the incident came to his attention and that he had directed senior officials to initiate necessary action.

Liju stated that the government would not compromise on the issue and was considering stricter guidelines to ensure that bars comply with the age restrictions. He also noted that the existing Abkari Act contains provisions to take action against establishments that serve alcohol to individuals below the legal age, while additional measures are being examined to improve enforcement across the state.
Highlighting the wider public safety concerns associated with alcohol consumption and road accidents, the minister said several fatal crashes in Kerala had involved drivers allegedly under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances. He stressed the need for responsible behaviour and stricter compliance with regulations to prevent further loss of life.

The car was reportedly driven by a 19-year-old Kochi resident, identified as Suhail, who was arrested following the accident and booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
According to police, investigators recovered videos purportedly showing the accused driving at speeds exceeding 200 kmph. Police also said the luxury car had been gifted to him by his mother for his birthday. Three other occupants of the car, identified as Ninav, Ameer and Joel, were also arrested in connection with the case.
The Kerala government’s proposed measures are aimed at strengthening compliance among licensed bars and preventing alcohol from being served to people below the prescribed age. Further action will depend on the enforcement guidelines and decisions taken by the state authorities.
