Puducherry: The Puducherry Police have directed owners of bars and liquor outlets to strictly adhere to the prescribed closing time of 11 p.m. and ensure the installation and proper functioning of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras on their premises. The instructions aim to strengthen law and order, improve monitoring at liquor establishments and prevent incidents linked to alcohol consumption.
The directions were issued during a meeting convened by Superintendent of Police (South) Chintha Kothandaraman with owners of liquor outlets in the region. During the meeting, the police instructed establishment owners to close their shops by 11 p.m. without exception and ensure that customers do not consume alcohol in open spaces near their premises.

According to an official press note, all liquor outlets have also been directed to install CCTV cameras and ensure that the equipment remains operational. The measure is intended to improve surveillance and assist the police in monitoring activities around bars and liquor shops, particularly in the event of disputes or other law-and-order incidents.
The police have further instructed liquor outlet owners not to sell alcoholic beverages to individuals below 18 years of age. Establishment operators have also been asked to immediately inform the police about any quarrels, altercations or disturbances occurring on their premises, rather than delaying the reporting of such incidents.

The meeting was held against the backdrop of recent law-and-order problems reportedly arising after alcohol consumption. The police have emphasised the importance of cooperation between liquor businesses and law enforcement agencies to prevent disturbances and maintain public safety.
The latest directions place greater responsibility on bar and liquor outlet operators to ensure compliance with prescribed operating hours, age-related restrictions, surveillance requirements and public-order measures. Owners have been asked to follow the instructions strictly to avoid violations and help maintain a safe environment for customers and the surrounding community.
The enforcement measures underline the Puducherry Police’s focus on regulating liquor outlet operations and addressing public safety concerns associated with alcohol consumption. Strict compliance with closing hours and CCTV requirements is expected to support improved monitoring and faster police intervention when incidents occur.
