Carlsberg Britvic expands premium world beer portfolio with Japanese beer brand Sapporo following joint venture with Sapporo Breweries
Carlsberg Britvic has announced that it will brew, market and distribute Sapporo Premium Beer across the UK from 1 August, significantly expanding the Japanese beer brand’s presence in both the on-trade and off-trade markets.

The move follows the joint venture between Carlsberg Group and Sapporo Breweries, under which Carlsberg Britvic will become Sapporo’s full license partner in the UK. The company will oversee nationwide brewing, distribution, sales and marketing activities for the premium Japanese beer brand.
Sapporo expands from on-trade to UK retail market
Sapporo has already been distributed successfully through the UK on-trade for the past 18 months, and the new agreement extends its reach to supermarkets, retail stores and other off-trade channels across the country.

The partnership strengthens Carlsberg Britvic’s premium beer portfolio at a time when UK consumers are increasingly seeking premium international beer brands and authentic global drinking experiences.
Growing demand for Japanese beer and cuisine in the UK
According to market research cited by Carlsberg Britvic, the UK Japanese restaurant sector is valued at £1.6 billion, reflecting strong consumer interest in Japanese food, culture and beverages.
Industry analysts believe this growing popularity of Japanese cuisine is creating a favourable environment for premium Japanese beer brands such as Sapporo to expand their presence in the UK retail market.
Carlsberg Britvic sees strong momentum in premium world beers
Commenting on the launch, Dharmesh Rana, Brand Director – Premium Brands at Carlsberg Britvic, said the company is excited to add Sapporo to its portfolio because of its long brewing history and strong heritage.
“Dating back to 1876, Sapporo is the epitome of Japanese precision and craftsmanship, and we can’t wait to start telling the brand’s story to our customers and consumers,” Rana said.
He added that UK shoppers are increasingly trading up to premium world beers, while opportunities to discover authentic premium Japanese beers remain relatively limited in the market.
“As shoppers look to trade up, we’re seeing clear momentum in premium world beers. While Japanese cuisine continues to gain popularity, consumers have fewer opportunities to discover authentic premium Japanese beers. Sapporo is helping meet the growing consumer demand, bringing a premium Japanese beer experience to more consumers,” he said.
Sapporo strengthens Carlsberg’s premium beer strategy
Founded in 1876, Sapporo Premium Beer is one of Japan’s oldest and most recognised beer brands, known globally for its clean, crisp lager style and premium positioning.
For Carlsberg Britvic, the addition of Sapporo supports its broader strategy of expanding in the premium and world beer segments, which continue to outperform mainstream beer categories in many developed markets.
The agreement also gives Carlsberg greater exposure to the growing premium Asian beer category, as consumers increasingly seek international, craft-inspired and culturally authentic beer experiences.
With Carlsberg Britvic now handling brewing, marketing and distribution across both on-trade and off-trade channels, Sapporo is expected to gain wider retail availability and stronger brand visibility throughout the UK market.
