New Delhi, July 25, 2026: Liquor shops across Delhi will close at 8 pm instead of the usual 10 pm until the end of the weekend, following security concerns raised by Delhi Police as student demonstrations continue at Jantar Mantar in central Delhi.
The decision follows an unannounced early closure of liquor shops on Thursday, July 23, that left many customers surprised after they were turned away. “The shops will now close by 8 pm till the weekend. The decision was taken based on the police inputs flagging the prevailing situation due to the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar,” a senior Delhi government officer said.
The revised timings have been implemented based on police security advisories, with the early closure serving as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order in the affected areas.
The weekend — particularly Friday and Saturday evenings — accounts for a significant share of weekly liquor sales in Delhi, with the 8 pm to 10 pm window being among the busiest retail periods for liquor vends across the city. The two-hour reduction in operating hours across this period will affect retail sales volumes for the duration of the restriction.

Delhi’s liquor vends currently operate under government management following the scrapping of the previous private licence model. The state has over 700 liquor outlets across the city, all of which are covered under the revised weekend timing directive.
