Drinking Alcohol With Diabetes? It Could Lead to Dangerous Low Blood Sugar

More and more people, including those with diabetes, are drinking alcohol regularly. However, experts are warning that alcohol can have a serious impact on blood sugar levels, making it risky for diabetics.

Dr. Dinesh Kumar Tyagi, an internal medicine specialist at Fortis Hospital in Greater Noida, advises diabetes patients to avoid alcohol. This is because alcohol contains calories and carbohydrates, which can cause blood sugar to spike. But once the alcohol’s effect fades, blood sugar can suddenly drop, sometimes leading to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), a potentially life-threatening condition.

Excessive alcohol intake can also interfere with insulin function, making it harder to manage blood sugar levels. Drinking on an empty stomach can further complicate things by affecting liver function.

Additionally, alcohol can cause dehydration, which is dangerous for diabetics as it disrupts blood sugar control and puts extra stress on the kidneys. Alcohol is also high in calories, contributing to weight gain, which can make managing diabetes more difficult. Maintaining a healthy weight is essential for blood sugar control, and excessive alcohol can reduce insulin efficiency, leading to more complications.

In short, diabetics should be cautious about drinking alcohol, as it can lead to rapid changes in blood sugar that could be harmful to their health.
