PM Praises Arunachal Man for Overcoming Alcoholism and Becoming a Community Leader in Mann Ki Baat

Prime Minister Modi recently praised Deepak Nabam, a man from Arunachal Pradesh, for his remarkable transformation from an alcoholic to a community leader, during his “Mann Ki Baat” broadcast. Nabam, now 50, was once a college dropout and struggled with severe alcoholism, which led to liver cirrhosis. He nearly lost his life to the addiction, but after strict medical treatment and discipline, he recovered.

Once he regained his health, Nabam opened a small bookstall in Itanagar with a government grant. Over time, he began helping people with mental illnesses and physical disabilities. His journey began when he took in a mentally challenged man who was living on discarded food outside his bookstall. This act of kindness grew into a larger mission to care for marginalized and vulnerable individuals.

Today, Nabam runs the “Deepak Nabam Living Home,” which cares for over 300 people, including those with mental health issues, physical disabilities, and the elderly. His facility also helps those recovering from substance abuse. The home is supported by ambulances from the state government, and doctors provide regular care.

Prime Minister Modi praised Nabam’s selfless work, highlighting his commitment to serving society’s most vulnerable without any outside support. Nabam’s initiative has now become an official organization, earning awards for its impact.

With this recognition, Nabam hopes his efforts will expand throughout Arunachal Pradesh and the northeastern region, addressing the growing need for mental health care and support for the underprivileged.
