Munich: International travel patterns for Oktoberfest 2026 are showing a significant shift, with bookings from India rising sharply while demand from some traditional markets, including the United States and United Kingdom, declines. According to new travel data, air bookings from India for the Oktoberfest period have increased by around 60%, highlighting growing interest among Indian travellers in Germany’s world-famous beer festival.
Japan has also recorded strong growth, with bookings up 31%, while Canada and Australia have reported increases of 9% and 6%, respectively. In contrast, bookings from the United States have fallen by approximately 10%, while demand from the United Kingdom is down 16%. The changing visitor mix indicates that emerging international markets are playing a larger role in driving overseas attendance at Oktoberfest this year.

Another notable trend is the rise in solo travel. Around 47% of flight bookings linked to the Oktoberfest period are for individual travellers, suggesting that the festival is increasingly attracting independent visitors rather than being driven primarily by groups and organised tours. Longer stays are also gaining popularity, with bookings for trips lasting 14 nights or more increasing by approximately 13%.
Despite the strong international interest, Munich’s hotel market is not experiencing the same level of demand expected from the festival’s huge visitor numbers. Average hotel occupancy during the Oktoberfest period is estimated at around 70.9%, about 5.3 percentage points lower than previously recorded. At the same time, average daily hotel rates have increased to approximately €326.

The busiest period is expected between September 20 and 27, when hotel occupancy could reach around 78%, while average room rates are projected to rise to approximately €368. This means travellers visiting during the peak week may face tighter availability and higher accommodation costs compared with other dates.
Oktoberfest 2026 will officially begin on September 19 at Munich’s Theresienwiese and run until October 4. The 16-day celebration is expected to attract millions of visitors, with Munich’s rail network preparing for around 100,000 additional passengers each day.
The sharp increase in bookings from India, along with growing demand from Japan, Canada and Australia, points to a changing international profile for Oktoberfest. While hotel occupancy remains below earlier expectations overall, peak weekends are likely to remain the most competitive periods for accommodation and travel.
