New Authentication Mark Aims to Protect the Identity of Indian Single Malts
The Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWI) is preparing to introduce a special hologram-based trademark for certified Indian single malt whiskies. The initiative is designed to establish a clear identity for genuine Indian single malts, prevent counterfeit products, and strengthen consumer confidence in one of the country’s fastest-growing premium spirits categories.
The proposed hologram will serve as an official mark of authenticity, allowing buyers to easily identify whiskies that meet IMWI’s quality standards and production guidelines.
Why the Hologram Matters
India’s single malt whisky industry has witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade, earning recognition in domestic and international markets. However, the increasing popularity of premium Indian whiskies has also raised concerns over misleading labeling and imitation products.

To address these issues, IMWI plans to issue a certified hologram trademark exclusively to member companies that comply with the association’s standards. The hologram will help consumers distinguish authentic Indian single malts from products that do not meet the required criteria.
Which Whisky Companies Could Receive the IMWI Trademark?
The hologram trademark is expected to be granted to IMWI member distilleries producing genuine Indian single malt whisky. Companies likely to qualify include some of India’s leading premium whisky makers, provided they meet the association’s certification requirements.
The certification will verify that the whisky has been produced according to the standards established by IMWI, reinforcing transparency and product authenticity.
Strengthening the Global Reputation of Indian Whisky
Industry experts believe the hologram initiative will enhance the credibility of Indian single malt whisky in both domestic and export markets. A standardized authentication mark is expected to improve brand trust, support premium positioning, and protect the reputation of Indian whisky producers worldwide.
As Indian single malts continue to win prestigious international awards and expand into new markets, the IMWI certification could become an important benchmark for quality and authenticity.

Boost for Consumers and the Industry
The introduction of the hologram trademark is expected to benefit both consumers and producers. Buyers will gain greater confidence when purchasing certified bottles, while legitimate distilleries will receive stronger protection against counterfeit or misleading products.
With demand for premium Indian single malt whisky continuing to rise, the IMWI’s authentication program marks another significant step toward building a globally recognized identity for India’s world-class whisky industry.
