Paul John Whisky: The Rise of One of India’s Leading Single Malt Brands
Paul John Single Malt has emerged as one of India’s most successful single malt whiskies, combining global inspiration with a strong Indian identity. Interestingly, the brand was first launched in the UK in 2012, at a time when non-Scotch “world whiskies” were still gaining recognition. The strategy worked well, as early international awards helped establish its credibility.
Produced by John Distilleries, the brand was founded by Paul P. John, who wanted to create a world-class Indian single malt. While the company was already successful in the IMFL segment with brands like Original Choice, this venture marked a shift towards premium whisky.
Over the years, Paul John has grown rapidly and is now available in 44 countries, winning nearly 400 awards globally. Today, the brand is not just export-driven—around 70% of its production is now sold within India, reflecting its strong domestic demand.

Goa’s Unique Influence
The whisky is produced in Goa, and the region plays a crucial role in shaping its character. Unlike cooler whisky-producing regions, Goa’s warm and humid climate speeds up the ageing process, allowing the whisky to mature nearly three times faster than in Scotland. This “tropical ageing” gives the whisky deeper flavours even at a younger age.
The brand uses Indian six-row barley sourced from the Himalayan foothills, along with local yeast and Goan spring water. This gives Paul John whisky a rich, full-bodied taste that stands apart from other single malts.
Range and Craftsmanship
Paul John began with two core expressions—Brilliance and Bold—but today offers a wide range of around 14 variants. These include different ageing styles, strengths, and cask finishes, along with lightly peated whiskies. The distillery even imports peat from Scotland to create a subtle smoky flavour without overpowering the spirit.
Popular variants like Brilliance, Classic Select Cask, and Peated Select Cask highlight the brand’s balance of flavour, strength, and craftsmanship. The whiskies are typically non-chill filtered, preserving their natural oils and enhancing taste.
Premium and Experimental Editions
Beyond its core range, the brand has introduced special editions like Mithuna from its Zodiac series and limited Christmas releases. These editions often experiment with different cask combinations, such as bourbon and sherry barrels, creating complex and seasonal flavour profiles.
The company has also collaborated internationally, including partnerships linked to Sazerac Company, further strengthening its global presence.
Strong Growth and Market Position
Paul John has firmly established itself as a key player in the Indian single malt category. Its growth was further supported when its Bold variant was included in Make in India, helping expand its reach across the country despite complex state-wise liquor regulations.
With increasing production capacity and a strong mix of domestic and international demand, Paul John continues to shape the image of Indian single malts on the global stage.
