Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government has officially implemented a liquor ban in 19 religious towns and nearby village areas, including Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, and Maihar.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav called the move a “historic step” towards reducing alcohol consumption and promoting de-addiction.
Under this decision, all liquor shops and bars in these areas will be shut down completely. The ban also applies to selected gram panchayats, which have been declared “sacred” due to their religious importance.

The decision was approved by the state cabinet earlier this year during a meeting held in Maheshwar, a place linked to the legacy of Ahilyabai Holkar.
Many of these locations hold deep religious significance. For example, Ujjain is home to the famous Mahakaleshwar Temple, while Amarkantak is known as the origin of the Narmada River.
The government said the decision was taken keeping in mind public faith and respect for these holy places.
