In a major decision, the Punjab Assembly has approved a ban on the sale and consumption of meat, alcohol, tobacco, and other intoxicants in three of the state’s holy cities. The ban will apply to Anandpur Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, and the Galiara area.
The resolution was introduced by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and was passed unanimously during a special session of the Punjab Assembly, held in Anandpur Sahib to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
As a result of this move, these three locations—Anandpur Sahib (in Rupnagar district), Talwandi Sabo (in Bathinda), and Galiara—will now be designated as sacred cities, where the sale and use of meat, alcohol, tobacco, and other intoxicants will no longer be allowed.
