Scientists Find Simple Way to Cut Down on Alcohol Consumption

A recent study has revealed an easy and effective method to reduce alcohol intake. The research found that combining information about the cancer risks of alcohol with tracking how much you drink can significantly help people cut back. The study showed that warning about alcohol-related cancers while encouraging drinkers to track each drink they consume is a powerful tool to reduce excessive drinking.

Excessive alcohol use is linked to serious health issues such as heart disease, digestive problems, dementia, and premature death. This approach offers a simple way to improve health and lower the risks associated with heavy drinking.

Professor Simone Pettigrew, the lead author of the study from The George Institute for Global Health, explained that alcohol abuse is a significant health issue in Australia, leading to injuries, chronic diseases, and premature death. Even moderate drinking increases the risk of several types of cancer.

She stressed that there are limited resources for alcohol harm-reduction campaigns, so it’s crucial to find messages that resonate with people. “Many don’t realize that alcohol is a carcinogen, and it’s vital that drinkers know this. But simply telling them alcohol causes cancer isn’t enough—we also need to provide practical ways for them to reduce their risk,” she said.

The study, which involved three surveys completed by 7,995 participants, found that combining information about alcohol and cancer with the action of counting drinks led to a noticeable reduction in alcohol consumption.
