Goa: Goa-based Indian single malt producer Paul John has introduced a highly limited whisky, The Doppelgänger, priced at ₹8,200 per bottle. The release stands apart from conventional whisky offerings because it comes entirely from a single cask, making the batch exceptionally limited and non-repeatable.
The whisky is drawn from Cask #24194, which produced only 156 bottles for sale in Goa and Karnataka. Once these bottles are sold, the exact expression cannot be recreated, adding to its appeal among collectors and whisky enthusiasts.
Nearly Nine Years in India
A major factor behind the whisky’s positioning is its extended maturation. The Doppelgänger was aged for close to nine years in India’s tropical climate, where high temperatures and humidity accelerate the interaction between whisky and oak.

Indian maturation can be considerably more intense than ageing in cooler climates. The stronger wood interaction can help develop flavour and character more quickly, but it also results in greater evaporation from the cask. This reduces the quantity of whisky available for bottling after several years of maturation.
As a result, long-aged Indian single malts can become particularly scarce, especially when the whisky is sourced from only one barrel.
A Rare Cask
The whisky was matured in an American white oak cask imported from the US, which had previously contained Sazerac straight rye whiskey.
The previous contents of the barrel influenced the character of the whisky, contributing notes associated with dried fruits, baking spices, chocolate and vanilla. The cask therefore became an important part of the final flavour profile rather than simply serving as a maturation vessel.
Unlike standard whisky releases, which can combine spirit from numerous casks to maintain consistency between batches, a single-cask whisky reflects the distinctive character of one individual barrel.
Chosen by Whisky Enthusiasts
The Doppelgänger was developed in collaboration with the Single Malt Amateur Club, a national community of whisky enthusiasts.
Club members selected the cask through a blind tasting process, without being told its brand, age or type of wood. The expression was subsequently named The Doppelgänger because its flavour profile reminded tasters of the rich, sweet character commonly associated with European sherry-cask maturation.
Interestingly, the whisky achieved this character without being matured in a sherry cask.
With only 156 bottles available, nearly nine years of tropical maturation and a distinctive rye-seasoned American oak cask, The Doppelgänger represents a limited-release approach in India’s growing premium single malt segment.
