Tourists May Soon Enjoy Vineyard Walks and Wine Tasting in Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is preparing to introduce vineyard tourism as a new attraction under its rural tourism strategy. The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has drafted a proposal to amend the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Policy 2022 to officially include vineyard tourism as a separate tourism category.
If approved, the initiative could pave the way for vineyard units across rural parts of the state, where visitors would be able to explore fruit orchards, witness wine-making processes and enjoy wine tasting experiences.
According to the proposal, these tourism units would receive the status of recognized tourism enterprises if they provide integrated facilities such as fruit cultivation, wine production, vineyard tours, wine tasting sessions and on-site product sales within a single campus.

To operate legally, such establishments would be required to obtain an excise license along with certification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The proposed model also includes development of tourist-friendly infrastructure such as wine tasting zones, cafeterias or snack bars, retail outlets and visitor amenities.
Globally, vineyard tourism has emerged as a successful model of agricultural and experiential tourism. Regions like Napa Valley in the United States and Tuscany in Italy have earned worldwide recognition through their thriving wine tourism industries.
In India, Maharashtra’s Nashik region has already demonstrated the success of vineyard tourism. Popular vineyards such as Sula, Soma, York and Vallonné attract thousands of tourists annually. Visitors there experience vineyard walks, wine production tours, tasting sessions and luxury stays.
Uttar Pradesh is one of India’s leading producers of fruits such as mango, guava, jamun and bael. Officials believe that introducing vineyard tourism could create new income opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs and rural youth while also strengthening the fruit processing industry.
The Tourism Department has stated that the proposal will move forward only after receiving approval from the Chief Minister.
How Vineyard Tourism Can Benefit Uttar Pradesh
The proposed initiative is expected to support rural development and diversify the state’s tourism offerings. Vineyard tourism could encourage investment in agri-tourism projects, generate local employment and increase demand for fruit-based products.
Industry experts also believe that experiential tourism, where visitors actively participate in cultural or agricultural activities, is becoming increasingly popular among domestic travelers. Uttar Pradesh hopes to tap into this trend by combining tourism with agriculture and food processing.
If implemented successfully, vineyard tourism could emerge as a unique rural tourism attraction in Uttar Pradesh and position the state as a new destination for fruit-based experiential travel in India.
