Diageo India has introduced an upgraded blend of McDowell’s No.1 Whisky, increasing its Scotch malt content by 30% to deliver a smoother and richer taste. The reformulation aims to strengthen the brand’s position in India’s mass-premium whisky segment by focusing on product quality, craftsmanship and evolving consumer preferences. The new blend has entered distribution in Uttar Pradesh, with a nationwide rollout planned by the company.
The updated McDowell’s No.1 Whisky has been developed to meet the changing expectations of Indian whisky consumers, who are increasingly looking beyond affordability to consider flavour, quality and drinking experience. According to Diageo India, the increased proportion of Scotch malt is intended to enhance the whisky’s taste while maintaining the accessibility and broad consumer appeal associated with the brand. The initiative also reflects the company’s strategy to modernise an established whisky brand for a new generation of consumers.

McDowell’s No.1 combines imported Scotch, Indian malts and grain spirits, with the whisky matured in oak and American barrels before blending operations across India and Scotland. The brand has a substantial presence in the Indian spirits market, selling more than 30 million nine-litre cases annually, according to the company.
Ruchira Jaitly, Chief Marketing Officer at Diageo India, said the company’s reformulation strategy was informed by market research involving more than 10,000 consumers across 11 markets. She highlighted how consumer perceptions of value are evolving, with greater emphasis on quality, craftsmanship and experience alongside affordability. According to Jaitly, the initiative is intended to help shape the future of India’s mass-premium whisky category while strengthening McDowell’s No.1’s market positioning.
