United Breweries Limited has announced the closure of its brewery unit in Ludhiana, Punjab, effective June 30, 2026, as part of a strategic operational restructuring aimed at strengthening supply efficiency in North India. The company said the move follows a long-term capacity lease agreement with a contract brewing partner to ensure uninterrupted beer supplies across Punjab, Delhi and neighbouring states.
The brewery unit, located at Focal Point in Ludhiana, has been part of the company’s manufacturing network in Punjab. However, the latest transition reflects a broader shift by major beverage companies towards asset-light and contract manufacturing models to improve operational flexibility, optimize costs and enhance regional supply-chain efficiency.
According to the company’s regulatory filing, the newly signed long-term lease arrangement with a contract brewing unit will help United Breweries maintain stable production volumes and efficiently cater to future market demand in Punjab and nearby northern markets. The company emphasized that the closure of the Ludhiana facility will not impact the availability of its beer portfolio in the region.

Focus on operational efficiency and future growth
Industry experts believe the move highlights how leading beer companies are increasingly focusing on flexible manufacturing strategies amid rising input costs, logistics challenges and evolving state-level regulatory frameworks. Contract brewing partnerships are becoming more common in India’s alco-beverage industry as companies look to scale operations while reducing capital-intensive infrastructure investments.
United Breweries Limited stated that the long-term lease agreement will support future demand “efficiently and sustainably” through enhanced operations within Punjab. The company has also informed the Punjab Excise Department regarding the planned closure.
Commitment to employees and market continuity
The company further said it remains committed to supporting employees and workmen affected by the transition and will take all necessary and responsible steps during the restructuring process.
Headquartered in Bengaluru and part of the global HEINEKEN group, United Breweries Limited is India’s largest beer manufacturer with a strong portfolio that includes Kingfisher, Kingfisher Ultra, Heineken Silver and Amstel Grande.
The development underscores the ongoing transformation within India’s beer industry, where companies are balancing premiumization, operational efficiency and regional supply optimization to support long-term growth.
