Goa-crafted artisanal feni aims to redefine the traditional spirit for modern premium consumers
Goa-based alcobev company Kantala Spirits has launched Gracia Século XVI, a premium cashew feni inspired by Goa’s rich distillation heritage and the origins of the iconic local spirit. With the launch, the company aims to position feni as a contemporary craft beverage for modern Indian consumers seeking authentic regional spirits.
The name Gracia Século XVI pays tribute to the 16th century, when cashew trees were first introduced to Goa by the Portuguese, eventually leading to the evolution of cashew feni — a spirit deeply rooted in Goan culture and tradition.
Crafted in Goa using traditional small-batch methods, the premium feni is produced from cashew apples sourced from Pernem in North Goa, a region known for high-quality cashew cultivation. The spirit undergoes double distillation in copper pot stills and is aged in earthenware vessels and traditional glass garrafaos to retain its authentic character while offering a smoother, refined drinking experience.
According to Founder-Director Suzann Homan, the inspiration behind the brand comes from memories of Goan summers, local bhattis, and the community traditions associated with feni production. She said the brand seeks to preserve Goa’s heritage while introducing the spirit to a younger generation of premium beverage consumers.
The product is presented in a distinctive tinted blue bottle designed to protect the spirit from UV exposure while drawing inspiration from classic Goan glass packaging traditions. The company describes the spirit as having tropical fruit notes, earthy undertones, and a smooth finish suitable for both sipping and cocktails.
Industry experts believe the launch reflects the growing popularity of artisanal Indian spirits, heritage-driven alcobev brands, and regional craft beverages among urban consumers.
Gracia Século XVI is currently available at select retail outlets across Goa and will gradually expand into major metro markets across India. The premium cashew feni is priced at ₹1,950 for a 750 ml bottle and has an alcohol content of 42.8% ABV.
