Shillong, Sep 15: Beer makers have lauded the Meghalaya government’s decision to reduce taxes on beer by 20 percent, calling it a step in the right direction.
The move, cleared by the state cabinet last week, has sparked some debate as Meghalaya already records high alcohol consumption. But the Brewers Association of India (BAI) believes the decision will encourage people to choose beer and wine—drinks with lower alcohol content—over stronger spirits.
Vinod Giri, Director General of BAI, said the reform is a “nudge towards moderate and more responsible drinking.” He also pointed out that Maharashtra recently took similar steps to make beer and wine more affordable, and Meghalaya has now become the first state in the East to follow this path.
According to BAI, the decision will not only support responsible drinking habits but also boost the local economy by strengthening the beer manufacturing sector.
