Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The latest data from the state excise department reveals a shift in alcohol consumption patterns in Madhya Pradesh. While the demand for country liquor has declined, the consumption of foreign liquor, including spirits and malt-based beverages, has reached record levels.
Decline in Country Liquor Consumption
In the financial year 2023-24, the state consumed 1,425.28 lakh proof litres of country liquor, down from 1,448.22 lakh proof litres in 2022-23. This marks a slight decline from the previous year’s all-time high. However, looking at past trends, consumption had been rising, with figures of 1,020.38 lakh proof litres in 2021-22 and 899.16 lakh proof litres in 2020-21.
Surge in Foreign Liquor Consumption
Meanwhile, the demand for foreign liquor continues to rise.

Spirits: The state consumed 744.90 lakh proof litres in 2023-24, compared to 684.69 lakh proof litres in 2022-23. This is the highest recorded consumption to date.

Malt Liquor (including Beer): Consumption increased to 1,933.35 lakh bulk litres in 2023-24, up from 1,909.18 lakh bulk litres in the previous year. Beer production also rose to 2,358.65 lakh bulk litres.
Liquor Trade: Import, Export, and Revenue

Imports: Madhya Pradesh imported 23.54 lakh proof litres of India-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) in 2023-24, up from 17.89 lakh proof litres in 2022-23.

Exports: The state exported 304.43 lakh proof litres of IMFL, nearly doubling from 166.69 lakh proof litres in the previous year.

Revenue Growth: Revenue from liquor sales hit a record ₹13,590.15 crore in 2023-24, up from ₹13,005 crore in 2022-23 and ₹10,395.69 crore in 2021-22.
The figures highlight a growing preference for foreign liquor over country liquor in Madhya Pradesh, along with a significant increase in government revenue from alcohol sales.
