In a resolute effort to combat the production and distribution of illicit liquor and curb tax evasion, the Excise Department in Himachal Pradesh has reported several significant seizures and actions taken in various districts.

Excise Commissioner, Dr. Yunus, disclosed that a specially constituted team in Sirmaur district has been making relentless efforts to tackle this issue. On Wednesday, they achieved significant breakthroughs by seizing 7000 litres, 4000 litres, and 9500 litres of Lahan (country liquor) at different locations, including dense forests in Toka-Nagla.

In a notable operation, this illicit liquor was found being prepared near a drain deep within the dense forest area. The department’s vigilance and prompt action are aimed at ensuring that the illegal production and sale of liquor are promptly curtailed.

On the same day, the Excise Department’s Mandi district team also made a substantial discovery. They confiscated 115 boxes of English liquor and beer that were apparently intended for sale in Chandigarh, highlighting a regional dimension to the illicit liquor trade.

Furthermore, in Shimla, a significant find of silver jewelry worth Rs. 3.33 lakh was made, but without valid bills or documents. The department has imposed a fine of Rs. 20,000 for the offense. Dr. Yunus emphasized that the department remains vigilant and committed to combating illegal activities, with a total of about Rs. 23 crore worth of unbilled jewelry seized to date.

In its crusade against illicit liquor and tax evasion, the department has also taken actions under the GST Act. A staggering 87,000 bulk liters of illicit liquor have been seized and destroyed, illustrating the department’s zero-tolerance approach in such cases.

The Excise Department has set up a 24×7 control room to facilitate public participation in reporting illegal liquor and tax evasion. Dr. Yunus once again urged the public to use the toll-free number 18001808060 and the Whatsapp number 94183-31426 to report any instances they observe.
