Lucknow: The demand for liquor seems to have gone up in Uttar Pradesh. The revenue generated by the excise department during the first half of the current fiscal year is up by 9% compared to the corresponding period last year.
The half-yearly performance review of the department that was carried out on Wednesday showed that the department was able to mop up about Rs 20,150 crore through sales of liquor. Last year, during the April 1 to September 30 period, the excise department generated Rs 18,509 crore as duty over sales of country liquor, Indian-made foreign liquor, beer and other alcoholic beverages.
Excise minister Nitin Agarwal though asked the officials to maintain the demand and supply ratio and availability of popular liquor brands during the upcoming festival season since the demand is slated to go up further.
Agarwal said that though the revenue is higher YoY during the first six months, it is nowhere close to the target set for the department. The state government has fixed a target of Rs 58,000 crore for the 2023-24 fiscal year through the liquor trade and ideally the department should have cornered Rs 25,000 crore to Rs 26,000 crore in the first half.
