Bengaluru: Karnataka Set a Record for Alcohol Sales on December 28, Reaching ₹408.53 Crore”

Karnataka saw record alcohol sales on Saturday, with liquor and beer worth ₹408.53 crore sold across the state, according to B. Govindaraju, General Secretary of the Federation of Wine Merchants’ Association of Karnataka.

Govindaraju explained that daily alcohol sales usually average around ₹100 crore. However, due to a state holiday on December 27 following the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, alcohol purchases were halted. On December 28, the Karnataka State Beverages Corporation Limited (KSBCL) reopened depots and extended credit facilities to liquor licensees, which led to the surge in sales.

Around ₹150 crore in credit was used by licensees, with both the excise department and KSBCL facilitating these transactions even on the holiday. The association thanked the authorities for their support.

The record-breaking sales included 6,22,062 cases of whisky and spirits, along with 4,04,998 cases of beer, totaling 10,27,060 cases. Whisky and spirits sales amounted to ₹327.50 crore, while beer sales reached ₹80.58 crore, setting an all-time high for one-day alcohol sales in the state.
