Thane, March 5, 2026:
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has announced that drivers and conductors working with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will now have to undergo mandatory alcohol tests. The move is part of the government’s strict zero-tolerance policy against alcohol consumption while on duty.
The decision came after the minister carried out a surprise inspection at the Parel bus depot, where several irregularities were found. During the inspection, liquor bottles were reportedly discovered in areas meant for drivers’ rest, raising concerns about staff behaviour and passenger safety.
Following the inspection, a committee was formed to investigate the issue and submit a detailed report to the transport minister.
Based on the findings, the government has introduced new guidelines under which regular as well as surprise alcohol checks will be conducted for MSRTC drivers and conductors. These checks will be carried out by vehicle examiners and officials at different bus depots.
In addition, the department will organise an “Alcohol Awareness Week” to educate employees about the risks of alcohol consumption and its impact on road safety.
The initiative aims to ensure that bus staff remain sober while on duty and to improve passenger safety across the state transport network.
