Technical Glitch Disrupts Liquor Supply in Telangana, Leading to Shortages
A technical issue in the computerized billing system at government liquor depots has caused a major disruption in liquor supplies across Telangana. Most liquor stores are running low on stock, with some even posting “no stock” signs. Shop owners reported that the last delivery they received was on Sunday, and the situation is becoming more urgent as premium whiskies, scotch, and other high-demand brands have already run out. The ongoing shortage of beer, which has been an issue since December, is also making matters worse.
D. Venkateshwar Rao, president of the Telangana Wine Dealers Association, said the disruption is affecting both business owners and the state government. Normally, the state delivers liquor worth around Rs 100 crore daily, but with three days of no deliveries, the government has already lost an estimated Rs 300 crore in revenue.
Most liquor stores keep a small buffer stock for emergencies, but that has quickly run out, and the lack of beer supplies is particularly troubling as it is the non-peak season, making the shortage unusual. Dealers are urging the government to fix the billing system glitch as soon as possible to prevent further losses for both the industry and state revenue.
