India raises a glass at ProWein 2026: APEDA takes India’s wines and spirits to the world stage
India announced its growing ambitions in the global alcoholic beverage market with a strong showing at ProWein 2026, the world’s leading trade fair for wines and spirits, held from March 15 to 17 in Düsseldorf, Germany. A total of 17 Indian companies — 15 of them under the aegis of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) — presented a diverse portfolio of homegrown brands to international buyers, distributors, and industry insiders.
The India Pavilion was formally inaugurated by Mr. Adarsh Singh, Excise Commissioner, Government of Uttar Pradesh, who led the historic first-ever APEDA delegation to ProWein. His presence as delegation head reflects the Uttar Pradesh government’s deepening commitment to positioning the state’s distilleries and AlcoBev producers on the global map. Mr. Bhupendra Nikhurpa, Consul (Commerce & Trade) from the Consulate General of India, Frankfurt, joined the inauguration ceremony alongside stakeholders and exhibitors.
A first-time delegation with a bold statement
For APEDA, this edition of ProWein marks a historic milestone. Under the leadership of Mr. Adarsh Singh, the delegation — comprising Dr. Tarun Bajaj, Senior Consultant, and Mr. Harpreet Singh, Regional Head — participated in the world’s most important drinks trade event for the very first time. The move signals a deliberate escalation in India’s strategy to carve out a meaningful share of the premium global beverage market.
Consul Bhupendra Nikhurpa interacted directly with exhibiting companies, encouraging them to deepen and expand their footprint in international markets — reinforcing India’s commitment to using diplomatic channels in support of AlcoBev exports.
The Uttar Pradesh government’s visible involvement, led by the State Excise Commissioner, also points to the increasing role of state administrations in export promotion. UP is home to several major distilleries and an emerging wine and spirits manufacturing ecosystem, and its active participation at ProWein signals that global ambition is no longer confined to traditional wine-producing states like Maharashtra and Karnataka.
What India brought to the table
The India Pavilion showcased an eclectic and increasingly sophisticated range of products, reflecting how far India’s alcoholic beverage industry has evolved. Visitors encountered offerings across several premium categories:
- Single Malt Whisky
- Indian Gin
- Craft Beer
- Indian Wines
- Premium Spirits

The presence of Indian single malt whisky drew considerable attention from international buyers. Indian malts have in recent years begun collecting accolades at global spirits competitions, and their appearance at ProWein — traditionally a wine-centric fair broadening its scope to include spirits — reflects both the growing prestige of the category and the ambition of Indian producers to compete at the very highest level.
About ProWein
ProWein is widely regarded as the world’s most important trade fair for wines and spirits, attracting tens of thousands of trade visitors from over 140 countries every year. Held annually in Düsseldorf, it provides unparalleled access to international buyers, sommeliers, distributors, and retail decision-makers across the global beverage industry. ProWein Düsseldorf 2026, held from March 15 to 17, 2026, solidified its position as the premier international trade fair for wines and spirits, focusing on high-efficiency, targeted business, and industry innovation. The event featured 3,400 exhibitors from 63 nations and attracted 31,000 professional visitors, offering a sharpened, optimized experience for the global wine and spirits sector.
APEDA’s strategic push for AlcoBev exports
APEDA’s participation in ProWein 2026 is part of a broader push by the Indian government to position the country’s food and beverage exports on the global premium map. While India has long been a significant exporter of agricultural commodities, the AlcoBev segment represents a newer, higher-value frontier — one where brand recognition, quality perception, and direct buyer relationships are critical. With India’s AlcoBev sector reporting strong domestic growth and several homegrown brands gaining traction internationally, the 2026 edition of ProWein may well mark the beginning of a more sustained and visible Indian presence at the world’s premier drinks trade events.
