Summer Heat and Cricket Season Boost Beer Demand

A strong summer and the ongoing cricket season are expected to significantly increase beer consumption across India. Brewers are anticipating double-digit growth, with more people choosing premium beers and consuming them at home, even as rising input costs continue to pressure margins.

According to industry players, beer demand in India is closely linked to weather conditions. Hot summers naturally drive higher consumption, and major cricket events like the IPL further amplify this trend by creating social drinking occasions across markets.

During big tournaments, not only does overall consumption rise, but drinking patterns also change. There is a noticeable shift towards house parties and group consumption, with consumers preferring cans and larger pack sizes. Retail outlets see faster sales, while bars and restaurants experience higher orders per table, especially during evening matches.

Large and urban markets are witnessing stronger demand, supported by better taxation policies, rising incomes, and a growing preference for premium brands. Northern states such as Delhi NCR, Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Uttar Pradesh continue to perform well, while smaller markets like Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh are recording faster growth rates in percentage terms.

However, the industry is also facing challenges. Ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia have disrupted the supply of key raw materials like glass and aluminium, increasing costs and affecting availability. While strong seasonal demand supports revenues, it does not fully offset the pressure on profit margins.

Despite these challenges, brewers remain focused on maintaining supply, managing costs, and capitalising on the seasonal surge driven by summer and cricket.
