Young Indians Are Choosing Better Alcohol Instead of Drinking More

A recent report highlights a change in drinking habits among young people in India. Instead of increasing how much alcohol they drink, many young consumers are switching to better and more premium brands.

Industry experts say there is a clear shift toward “drinking better rather than drinking more.” Many consumers, especially younger adults, prefer higher-quality spirits and cocktails instead of cheaper, high-volume drinks.

Companies in the alcohol industry are adjusting their strategies to match this trend. They are focusing on premium products, different price ranges, and smaller pack sizes so that consumers can try better brands without spending too much at once.

Affordable entry-level alcohol still sells well, especially among people who drink at home. However, luxury and premium alcohol brands are growing faster because many young Indians want products that reflect their improving lifestyles and aspirations.

Experts say that “aspirational India” is driving growth in the consumer goods market, including alcoholic beverages. As incomes and lifestyles improve, people are gradually trading up from basic products to premium ones.

Even with this growth, India’s overall alcohol consumption is still much lower than the global average, with per-person spirits consumption at about 2.6 litres per year.

In short, the trend shows that young Indians are not giving up alcohol, but they are becoming more selective and choosing higher-quality drinks.
