Greater Noida: The Gautam Budh Nagar excise department has stepped up inspections across liquor shops in the district to prevent overcharging and curb illegal liquor sales.
Officials said field staff have been asked to carry out stricter checks at retail outlets and ensure that shops follow pricing rules and digital payment norms. The move is part of a wider effort to strengthen enforcement and protect consumers.
Teams working in excise crime-prevention zones have been told to quietly verify complaints about shops selling liquor above the fixed price and take immediate action against violators.
District Excise Officer Subodh Kumar said the department is following a zero-tolerance policy on overpricing. “Any shop found selling liquor above the prescribed rate will face strict action as per rules. Enforcement teams have been directed to stay alert and ensure accountability at the retail level,” he said in a statement.
Shop owners have also been instructed to clearly display printed rate lists of all available brands so customers can easily check prices. In addition, stores must prominently put up warnings against drink-and-drive and provide information about the citizen app and toll-free complaint numbers.
To increase transparency, the department has directed shops to ensure 100% billing through point-of-sale (POS) machines and promote online payments. Officials said digital transactions reduce disputes over pricing and help prevent irregularities linked to cash sales.
The excise department is also strengthening its intelligence network to track illegal storage, transportation, and sale of liquor, especially in sensitive areas. Continuous monitoring and ground-level information are key to stopping the circulation of illicit alcohol, officials added.
The recent action follows last week’s warning to bars and restaurants against allowing or advertising “bring your own booze” (BYOB). Authorities clarified that BYOB is not permitted under the Uttar Pradesh Excise Policy 2025–26 in Gautam Budh Nagar.
Officials said some establishments were using BYOB promotions to attract customers, but any licensee found allowing or promoting such practices will face action under the UP Excise Act.
Overall, the department said the ongoing measures aim to tighten regulation of liquor sales in the district, ensure fair pricing for customers, and prevent illegal trade.
