Telangana recorded its highest-ever liquor sales in December 2025, with total sales reaching an impressive ₹5,100 crore. This is the highest monthly figure so far, surpassing the earlier record of over ₹4,300 crore set in December 2023.
Sales peaked during the last days of the year. On December 30 alone, liquor worth ₹375 crore was sold, making it the highest single-day sale in 2025. On December 31, the final day of the year, the Excise and Prohibition Department earned nearly ₹330 crore from liquor sales.
Officials said the department has set an ambitious target of ₹10,000 crore in liquor revenue for the final quarter (January to March) of the current financial year. So far, it has already earned around ₹30,000 crore from liquor sales during the first three quarters.
According to officials, one of the main reasons for the sharp rise in sales was the introduction of newly licensed liquor shops offering multiple brands and a variety of flavours. Changing consumer preferences and increased consumption, especially during New Year celebrations, also contributed to the surge. This was the first time the department exceeded its revenue target in December. While sales were expected to be around ₹4,500 crore, the actual figure went far beyond expectations.
Liquor consumption in the state usually peaks during major festivals such as Bonalu, Dasara, and New Year. To ensure compliance, the Excise Department instructed all licensed liquor shops to strictly follow the MRP rules and warned of strict action against anyone selling non-duty-paid liquor. Inspection teams conducted surprise checks at liquor shops during the last week of December to prevent illegal sales and price violations.
