Who Was Kapil Mohan? The Man Behind India’s Iconic Rum Who Never Drank Alcohol

Old Monk is more than just a bottle of rum for millions of Indians—it’s a memory, a comfort, and a taste that reminds many of home. But the surprising truth is that the man who made Old Monk a global success never consumed alcohol himself. His name was Brigadier Kapil Mohan, and his leadership turned Old Monk into a legend.


How Old Monk Started

The journey of Old Monk began in December 1954. Entrepreneur Ved Rattan Mohan created a special dark rum inspired by European Benedictine monks he had met on his travels. He admired their craftsmanship and decided to make a rum aged for seven years in oak barrels, blended with a unique mix of spices.

This drink, soon named Old Monk, became famous for its warm flavour and honest character. What makes it truly unique is that it gained popularity without a single advertisement. Its success spread through loyalty and word of mouth.

Today, Old Monk is exported to 22 countries, has a market value of over USD 10.3 million, and is among the top three best-selling rums in the world.


Who Was Brigadier Kapil Mohan?

Kapil Mohan didn’t start as a businessman—he was an officer in the Indian Army. He served with distinction and received the Vishisht Seva Medal for his service.

His military discipline shaped his business style. Patience, tradition, and a commitment to quality guided every decision he made at Mohan Meakin, the company behind Old Monk.

Apart from business, he actively contributed to society. He held leadership roles at institutions like Narendra Mohan Hospital and supported community organizations like the General Mohyal Sabha. He also completed a PhD and served as a director in several companies.


Taking Over the Business

After the sudden death of his brother, Ved Rattan Mohan, Brigadier Kapil Mohan took charge of Mohan Meakin. Under his leadership, Old Monk reached its peak popularity.

He believed that Old Monk didn’t need aggressive ads—its taste would speak for itself. And he was right. Old Monk became a cultural icon, representing simplicity, trust, and Indian craftsmanship.

Kapil Mohan also expanded the company into cereals, fruit juices, and mineral water, but Old Monk remained the brand’s identity.


A Legacy That Lives On

Brigadier Kapil Mohan passed away in 2018 due to a heart attack. Today, Mohan Meakin is run by his nephews, Hemant and Vinay Mohan.

Old Monk continues to stand for authenticity and quality. Brigadier Mohan’s life proves that a brand built with sincerity and dedication doesn’t need flashy advertising—it just needs excellence.
