Delhi’s New Liquor Policy Still in the Works; Only Government Shops to Continue for Now

The Delhi government is still working on its new excise (liquor) policy, and until it’s ready, only government-run liquor shops will be allowed to operate in the city. The current policy is set to expire on June 30, but officials say it will likely be extended for a few more months.

A high-level committee is reviewing liquor policies from other states and cities to help frame a more transparent and fool-proof system. The goal is to improve oversight and increase revenue, officials said. A preliminary report from the committee is expected soon.

At present, liquor sales in Delhi are managed by four government corporations. This system was brought back after the previous policy—launched in 2021, which allowed private shops—ran into legal trouble.

That earlier policy came under intense scrutiny in 2022, with central agencies like the CBI and ED investigating alleged irregularities. They claimed that leaders from the ruling AAP government had taken bribes and changed rules to benefit select businessmen. Several political leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, were arrested and later released on bail. Many liquor distributors were also blacklisted, which led to a shortage of popular liquor brands in Delhi.

Now, the government is exploring the option of bringing back private liquor shops in some form to offer more variety and better service to consumers. However, a final decision will only be made once the new policy is ready and approved.
