A BJP Member of Parliament from Haryana has proposed that the government allow the production of local liquor using natural ingredients like grains, sugarcane, fruits, and vegetables. His aim is to reduce the sale of dangerous, counterfeit alcohol made with methanol and other harmful substances, which has led to thousands of deaths across the country.
During a discussion in the Lok Sabha, Dharambir Singh, the MP for Bhiwani-Mahendragarh, suggested that allowing the production of country liquor from sugarcane juice and other natural sources could both save lives and boost farmers’ income. He emphasized that local licenses could be issued for producing such liquor, while ensuring that states would still collect their excise duties.
According to Singh, this initiative could increase farmers’ income by two to three times. He also highlighted that this approach would reduce the reliance on imported liquor from countries like the U.S. and European nations, bringing the focus back to local, traditional methods of production.
