IGL Makes First Maize Purchase from UP Farmers to Fulfill Biofuel Ethanol Mission

Gorakhpur: In a groundbreaking move, Indian Glycols Limited (IGL) has purchased maize directly from farmers in Uttar Pradesh for the first time. This significant step supports both the Indian government’s and the Uttar Pradesh government’s biofuel ethanol mission.

The purchase commenced on Saturday in Nathnagar, Gayghat of Sant Kabir Nagar, with the maize harvested by a combine machine. The inauguration ceremony was attended by chief guest SDM Kunwar Sachin Singh and Plant Head Shailendra Pandey.

IGL Business Head SK Shukla stated that this initiative is aimed at advancing the biofuel ethanol mission.

Shailendra Pandey explained that maize was cultivated on 100 acres of land during the summer and spring seasons across two districts in Purvanchal.

From one acre, 3,020 kg of maize grown by farmer Jitendra Kumar Singh was harvested and purchased by IGL, marking a first in the region.

Pandey emphasized that this is the first time IGL has undertaken both the sowing and purchasing of maize crops, working towards the government’s goal of 20% ethanol blending. The SDM noted that with IGL’s efforts, maize could become a profitable cash crop.

Speaking virtually at the event, SK Shukla remarked, “Where farmers in Purvanchal once could not imagine cultivating maize during the summer season, they are now planting high-yield varieties and seeing successful harvests. This progress indicates that the farmers of Purvanchal are on the path to becoming key players in shaping the region’s future.
