The excise department on Tuesday concluded the process of online auction of liquor vends in the city, and vends in 25 of the total 36 groups in Ludhiana were auctioned on the day. Tuesday was the last day of the auction and contractors of 25 groups had applied for renewal of their tenders for financial year 2023-24.

The vends in remaining 11 groups would now be allotted via e-tendering from Wednesday onwards. Besides, the office of Ludhiana’s excise department was abuzz with activity on Tuesday as liquor contractors and their staff visited the premises to inquire about formalities and last minute queries from the officials, even though the entire process was online this year.
Jalandhar zone deputy commissioner (excise) Paramjit Singh said, “The process of online auction of the liquor vends was successfully concluded today (Tuesday). As far as the excise ranges of Ludhiana East and West are concerned, total disposal of 70% liquor groups has been successfully done in the auction. Out of the 36 total groups, 25 have been renewed and cleared, while 11 remaining groups will be disposed of via e-tendering which will start Wednesday.”
He informed the groups which will be put up for e-tendering on Wednesday are Bus Stand, Malhar Road, Arora Palace, Dholewal, Sherpur, Bapu Market, Noorwala, Shivpuri , Sundar Nagar, Transport Nagar and Railway Station groups.
Earlier in the day, several rounds of meeting took place between different liquor contractors to jointly apply for different liquor vend groups, but as per sources no consensus could be reached, hence leaving 11 liquor groups unauctioned. However, several prominent contractors are making last minute efforts to try and convince the interested parties to take part in the e-tender now by forming an alliance and jointly bid for the vends.
