Uttar Pradesh is all set to become India’s first state to produce Mezcal. The state already boasts of having a good number of distilleries, and with an addition of a Mezcal distillery, it will rank amongst the top liquor producing states in the country.
According to official information, the state government’s department of Excise has been approached by a group of Mexican entrepreneurs who have expressed intent to produce “the very first Mezcal for India.”
The official communique by this group, as accessed by Businessworld, states that the group already has an infrastructure in the State of Oaxaca, SouthEast of Mexico where they produce the finest Mezcal. They are keen to come and participate in the Global Investors Summit and meet partners in UP “who want to make a strong partnership with the group.” The communication has been sent by Mario Zerecero G de C of Silverback Investors from Mexico.
It is worth mentioning here Mezcal is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from any type of agave. According to experts, UP offers a good soil condition for growth of agave and thus, production of Mezcal will boost the farming income as well. The project when finalised is expected to have an investment worth Rs 250 crore.
According to the Additional Chief Secretary Sugar Industries and Excise Government of Uttar Sanjay R Bhoosreddy, the state is surely welcoming this Mexican group to UP and get the country’s first Mezcal here. “UP has become a state suitable for investment across sectors. The policies of the excise department and the Uttar Pradesh government are proving to be fruitful for the state as not just domestic, but even foreign investors are keen to invest in UP. The Mexican Investors have shown a keen interest in setting up India’s first Mezcal production unit in UP and that itself says a lot about the policies of the state. They have already shared the details and talks are on with them. We are hoping for a positive output.”
