Indian government urges distilleries to maximize ethanol production

In India, Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) reported that the national government has urged all distilleries in the country to maximize production of ethanol to ensure the success of the country’s ethanol blending program.

In a meeting conducted by senior officials of the department of food and public distribution recently, supplies of ethanol were reviewed from all sugar based distilleries of major sugar producing states, except for Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, according to the report.

According to sources with knowledge of the matter, the meeting was attended by officials of all sugar producing states, oil marketing companies, industry associations and distilleries.

India’s ethanol blending program aims to reduce pollution and increase value added in the domestic sugar industry. The government has scaled up blending targets from 5% to 10% under the program.
