Guwahati: Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha has declared Vijayadashami on October 14 and October 15 as a dry day till Durga Visarjan by order on the basis of 52 no resolutions in the background of Durga Puja. Bars and liquor shops will remain closed in Kamrup metropolitan district on Friday, October 15, in view of Dashami celebrations. Assam Excise Department has declared Dashami i.e. 15th October as dry day in Guwahati. All foreign and country liquor godowns / IMFL ‘Off’ / ‘On’ Club ‘On’, country liquor retailers and business establishments engaged in the sale of liquor will remain closed on the same day. Violation of this instruction in any form is liable to strict action under the Excise Act.
Dry days are specific days when the sale of alcohol is not permitted. Most of the Indian states celebrate these days on major national festivals/occasions like Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15) and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2). Dry days are also observed in India during elections.
Prohibited days are also announced when elections are held in the state. For Lok Sabha or assembly elections, prohibited days are declared 48 hours before the close of polling, as well as the day(s) of counting of votes. For Municipality, Panchayat, Municipal Corporation, or Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council elections, the prohibited days are the polling day, the previous day, and the counting day.
