May 22, 2025 — In a major move to eliminate the problem of illicit liquor in Andhra Pradesh, the state government has set September 30, 2025, as the deadline to make the state completely free of illegally distilled (ID) liquor.
The announcement came from Principal Secretary of Excise, Mukesh Kumar Meena, during a review meeting held at the Excise Commissioner’s Office in Mangalagiri on Wednesday. This is part of the state’s renewed campaign, Navodayam 2.0, to intensify the fight against illegal alcohol.
Mr. Meena urged all district-level officials to prepare specific action plans and show visible results. He placed particular emphasis on districts like Kakinada, East Godavari, Srikakulam, and Parvathipuram-Manyam, where illicit liquor continues to be a major challenge.
He also made it clear that meeting the deadline is non-negotiable, and performance will be closely monitored.
Efforts to reduce the smuggling of non-duty paid liquor (NDPL) were also reviewed. Mr. Meena noted that the launch of affordable ₹99 liquor brands has helped curb illegal sales, but stressed that officials need to stay alert, especially in border districts such as Sri Sathya Sai, Anantapur, Kurnool, Nandyal, and Annamayya.
Strict Rules for Legal Liquor Sales
Mr. Meena also emphasized that licensed liquor outlets must strictly follow rules — selling only at or below the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) and operating during permitted hours. He called for preventive steps to avoid any mishaps and demanded strict discipline from excise officials.
All officers have been instructed to stay in their headquarters, respond quickly to complaints, and ensure senior officers conduct night patrols regularly.
To support better coordination and efficiency, Mr. Meena also released a new Diary-cum-Handbook for excise officers, which will guide them in their daily duties and improve professionalism in the department.
