As the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly prepares for its Budget Session on March 3, calls for a complete liquor ban in the region are gaining momentum. While the sale and consumption of alcohol are legal in J&K, drinking in public remains socially unacceptable, especially in the Kashmir Valley.
Concerns have been mounting due to social media posts showing intoxicated tourists, which many fear could contribute to increasing substance abuse in the region. Adding to this, three private member Bills proposing a ban on liquor have been submitted to the Assembly Secretariat for consideration.
However, the issue remains complex. While many advocate for a ban due to social and cultural reasons, others highlight the significant revenue generated from excise duties and tourism. The debate is expected to take center stage during the upcoming legislative discussions.
