A recent survey by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has revealed that Assam has the highest percentage of female alcohol consumption in India. According to the survey, 16.5% of women aged 15-49 in Assam consume alcohol, a significant rise compared to the national average of just 1.2%. Meghalaya follows with 8.7% and Arunachal Pradesh with 3.3%.
Interestingly, while metropolitan states like Maharashtra, Delhi, and Karnataka, known for their large corporate sectors, are often associated with higher alcohol consumption, they don’t appear prominently on the list. In contrast, northeastern states lead, with Assam topping the chart.
Meanwhile, the figures for Jharkhand and Tripura, which had previously seen higher alcohol consumption among women, have significantly decreased, indicating a positive shift.
The survey sheds light on the varied alcohol consumption patterns across different regions in India, with Assam emerging as a surprising leader.
