Hyderabad: The State Government is planning to raise liquor prices, including beer, as a way to boost revenue. With recent drops in revenue collections, officials are exploring various options to increase state tax income. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed the State Excise and Prohibition Department to find ways to enhance revenue from liquor sales.
Breweries have long requested an increase in beer prices to improve their profit margins, which is also being considered. Reports indicate that prices for premium whisky, beer, and wine could rise by 10% to 15%, and prices for Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) will also go up soon.
The excise department aims to generate an additional ₹500 crore in revenue from liquor sales each month this financial year. The government has set a target of ₹25,000 crore from liquor sales, and this extra income will help address financial challenges.
Revenue from liquor sales during the Dussehra festivities has been promising, and the government is optimistic about further earnings during Diwali, Christmas, and New Year celebrations. The price increase is expected to generate significant revenue, especially since demand for liquor tends to be high in November and December. Currently, there are 2,260 licensed liquor shops and 1,171 bars and restaurants in the state.
