The Meghalaya government has announced plans to implement a QR code tracking system for liquor products sold by the excise department. This initiative aims to reduce revenue loss and boost income by 5 to 10 percent.
After a cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma explained that every bottle of liquor sold in the state will have a QR code. This will allow officials to track the bottle’s journey, ensuring accountability and identifying any leaks in the sales system.
Sangma noted that the revenue from the excise department has already tripled since 2017, thanks to previous measures, and he is optimistic that this new system will further enhance revenue by monitoring and reducing leakages.
Additionally, the cabinet approved a proposal for a composite license for hotels. This means that instead of requiring separate licenses for each bar or restaurant within a hotel, a single license will be issued for the entire establishment. This change aims to streamline the licensing process, particularly for new five-star hotels, and will come with higher fees compared to regular bar licenses.
